Subject: Historical settlements
Toponym: Vergiano
Type: Rural settlement
Municipality: Monghidoro
Locality: Vergiano
Description:
In Vergiano there was a castle, documented since 1260 but of earlier origin. On the site there now stands a church, erected on the ruins of the castle, of which a wall facing the valley still remains.
The church contains documentation of a bell belonging to the founder Rolando, dated 1362.
In this place there was a quarry from which stone was taken for millstones. Around 1750, a burial ground was discovered here, with large human bones that were immediately broken up and buried elsewhere.
Different features of historical and architectural interest could be found in this settlement, including several architraves dated 1537 and 1562; in the 1970s, one door had a curved wooden architrave, since inappropriately replaced by a straight one.
