Description

"It was originally a hermitage as well as a fortified building; of 13th-14th century origin, it has traces of a terracotta bartizan with three corbels on the back.

A brick embedded in the masonry is dated 1529 and decorated" (source: Beni Culturali e Naturali della Provincia di Bologna ("Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Province of Bologna"), Edizioni Alfa, Bologna, 1977).

The summary description and black and white pictures date from 1975. Since that time the building, already modified over time, from when it was a hermitage, later converted into the convent and parish church of Santa Maria di Bortignano, was deprived of its religious functions during the period of Napoleonic suppression.

A few traces of the former use of the building remain on the facade, albeit not as part of the original structure; in recent times a brick doorway with a pointed arch was built here, similar to the one on the left side of the facade.

The stairways providing access to the doors were rebuilt; to the rear of this building is the one that housed the convent, next to the tower.
